What the Letters Mean Here
Search for "CPD" and you will find several unrelated credentials and concepts sharing the same three letters. Some searchers are looking for continuing professional development hours. Others want a project-management director title. This article is about none of those. On this site, CPD means Certified in Plumbing Design, a professional certification for people who engineer and design plumbing systems for buildings and sites.
If you landed here from a broader query, our companion pieces What Is CPD?, What Does CPD Stand For? and CPD Meaning walk through the naming confusion from different angles. The short version: if your work involves sizing drains, vents, water piping, pumps, fuel gas or medical gas systems, this is the CPD you want.
Who Issues the Credential and Who It Is For
The Certified in Plumbing Design credential is issued by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE). It is aimed at engineers, designers and other professionals who design plumbing systems, typically inside mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) consulting firms, engineering practices and design-build organizations. Employers who value it tend to be firms that want a recognized, third-party signal that a designer understands the full scope of plumbing design work, not just one narrow specialty.
ASPE runs the program through contracted examination administrators. The organization's current CPD Q&A identifies remote-proctoring correspondence coming from ProctorExam. Older job-analysis references mention Educational Testing Service, but that history should not be read as proof of who handles your booking today. Always follow the instructions ASPE sends to registered candidates.
For a deeper look at career value, see Is the CPD Certification Worth It? Complete ROI Analysis 2026 and the CPD Salary Guide 2026. Be cautious with any source that quotes a precise salary premium for this credential; we have not found a verified, ASPE-specific figure, so we do not publish one.
Exam Format at a Glance
| Feature | What ASPE Publishes |
|---|---|
| Number of questions | 100 multiple-choice |
| Time allowed | 3.5 hours (210 minutes) |
| Delivery | Electronic, remotely proctored |
| Style | Open-book written examination; no short-answer questions |
| Scored vs. unscored split | Not published |
| Wrong-answer penalty | None; scores reflect correct answers |
| Passing score | Cut score set by committee and psychometrician; no fixed number published |
| Results timing | Six to eight weeks |
Two details deserve emphasis. First, the exam is open book, but a 210-minute clock for 100 questions leaves roughly two minutes per item. Candidates who plan to look up everything will run short. The open-book format rewards people who know where things are and can apply code tables and formulas quickly, not people who learn the material during the test. Second, because no wrong-answer penalty applies, there is no scoring reason to leave a question blank.

What the Preparation Curriculum Covers
ASPE does not publish a complete, weighted exam blueprint in the sources we could verify. What does exist is the 2026 CPD Review Webinar Series from ASPE Education, which is organized into six webinars. Treat these as six preparation headings, not six official exam domains with percentage weights. They are a study supplement, not a substitute for the full body of plumbing engineering knowledge, and not a guarantee of exam coverage.
Webinar 1: Gathering Information; Flow in Drains; Interior (Sewage) Drainage Systems
The starting point of any plumbing design: what you need to know before you size anything, followed by the hydraulics of drainage.
- Collecting project information and design inputs
- Flow behavior in drains
- Interior sewage drainage system design
Webinar 2: Sanitary Vent Systems; Storm Drainage; Site Drainage; Cold Water Sizing
Venting, rainwater and site drainage, and the first half of water-supply sizing.
- Sanitary vent system design
- Storm drainage and site drainage
- Cold water pipe sizing
Webinar 3: Hot Water Sizing; Expansion & Contraction; Backflow Prevention
Domestic hot water systems, thermal movement in piping, and protecting potable water from contamination.
- Hot water system sizing
- Expansion and contraction in piping
- Backflow prevention
Webinar 4: Practice Exam; Sizing Pumps & Pumped Piping Systems; Sustainable Design; Fire Suppression
A practice-exam session paired with pumping, sustainability and fire suppression topics.
- Pump sizing and pumped piping systems
- Sustainable design
- Fire suppression
Webinar 5: Practice Exam 2; Fuel Gas Systems; Medical Gas Systems; Specifications
A second practice-exam session, plus the specialty gas systems and the documentation side of the work.
- Fuel gas systems
- Medical gas systems
- Specifications
Webinar 6: Quizzes; Construction Services; Administration
Quizzes, then the project-delivery phases that follow design.
- Construction services
- Administration
One honest caveat: the top-level overview for this series and the embedded descriptions of individual webinars do not agree on every placement. For example, the Webinar 4 description repeats the hot water, expansion/contraction and backflow topics, and the Webinar 5 description mentions fire suppression, which the overview assigns to Webinar 4. We follow the top-level overview and flag the discrepancy rather than quietly merging the two. Our CPD Exam Domains 2026 guide explores each area in more depth.
The Job Tasks Behind the Exam
Separately from the webinar structure, ASPE's CPD Q&A describes the exam in terms of job categories with approximate question allocations. These are approximate item counts, not percentage weights, and they do not replace the webinar curriculum above.
| Category | Approximate Questions | What It Involves |
|---|---|---|
| Gathering Information and Administration (combined) | 11 | Scope, existing conditions, project-team contacts, authority-having-jurisdiction requirements, utility availability, budget constraints, work plans and schedules, coordination with other design disciplines |
| Design | 65 | Identifying required systems, setting criteria for each, designing them, and coordinating them with one another and the building |
| Specifications | 13 | Choosing and coordinating specification format with the design, describing the systems, coordinating with other specification sections |
| Construction Services | 11 | Reviewing submittals and installations for contract-document compliance and witnessing system tests |
The practical lesson is that Design carries by far the largest share of the exam, which matches where most experienced designers spend their days. But the remaining categories add up to a meaningful fraction of the test. A candidate who can size a storm leader in their sleep but has never written a specification section or reviewed a submittal will feel the gap. This is why candidates should not treat the exam as a pure calculation drill.
Eligibility Routes
Per the CPD Examination page, you may qualify through any of the following:
- Full ASPE membership or previous approval to sit for the exam. "Full" refers to a specific membership classification, not any paid membership.
- Experience plus degree: at least four years of responsible plumbing-systems-design experience together with an engineering-related baccalaureate degree.
- Experience in lieu of the degree: up to four additional years of relevant practical experience (eight total), or half a year of experience credit for each full year of accredited plumbing-engineering-related education.
The Certified Plumbing Design Technician (CPDT) credential counts as one year of experience but is not a mandatory prerequisite. The CPD Q&A repeats the degree-and-experience route without mentioning the membership alternative, so the two sources differ slightly. We rely on the examination page wording, and you should confirm your own eligibility with ASPE before paying anything. Eligibility documentation and ASPE approval are still required. See CPD Requirements 2026 for a fuller walkthrough.
Fees, Scheduling and Results Timing
| Item | ASPE Member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee (current published) | $450 | $675 |
| Recertification fee | $75 | $165 |
| Reinstatement (includes recertification) | $200 | $260 |
These are the amounts on the current ASPE pages, not a promise about future pricing. Review-course and study-guide purchases are separate costs. For the full picture, see CPD Certification Cost 2026.
On scheduling: the 2026 exam administration is complete, which does not mean the credential has been retired. ASPE's examination page says to check back in November for 2027 dates, and the CPD Q&A points to spring 2027 with dates still to be determined. We will not guess at specific 2027 dates. An older cached page showed an April 2026 window, but that is history, not an upcoming appointment range. Track updates in CPD Exam Dates 2026.
Open-Book Rules and the Gaps You Must Confirm
"Open book" does not mean "anything goes." ASPE's public guidance is detailed, and parts of it conflict. Here is what the sources say and where they disagree.
- Printed references: bound printed references are permitted, and you may annotate within them. Loose notes, staples, sticky notes, tabs and flags are not allowed.
- Electronic references: the Q&A's Electronic Reference Materials Policy permits approved electronic references, pre-existing personal notes and document navigation and search, subject to platform restrictions. It prohibits AI assistance, communication, answer or coaching services, and secondary devices.
- Older FAQ: the older open-book FAQ says CD-ROMs and similar digital material are not allowed and discusses printed bound electronic material. Do not read either document as a blanket yes or no on digital resources.
- Calculators: the Q&A says any calculator is permitted, while the ASPE Education review-class page specifies a nonprogrammable calculator. A review-class instruction cannot settle the live exam rule, so confirm before buying or bringing one. A nonprogrammable model is the safer choice until ASPE tells you otherwise.
- Devices: the Q&A requires a phone or tablet for monitoring while its electronic policy prohibits secondary phones and tablets. The public wording does not resolve this, so ask ASPE or ProctorExam what the required proctoring setup is.
What CPD Is Not
The CPD is a respected specialty certification, but it is not a government license. It is not a Professional Engineer (PE) registration, it does not give you a PE title, and it does not confer authority to sign or stamp engineering documents. ASPE's own June 2023 president's column draws this distinction. If your jurisdiction requires a licensed engineer to seal plumbing drawings, the CPD does not substitute for that.
It is also not the same as the CPDT. The technician-level credential is a precursor in the ASPE family, and it is optional on the path to CPD. And it is not a plumbing contractor license, which covers installing work rather than engineering it. Our CPD Certification overview and CPD Jobs pages give additional context on how employers treat the credential.
Keeping the Credential Active
A CPD is valid for two years. Recertification requires 2.4 CEUs (24 contact hours) in each cycle, which runs from May 1 through April 30 two years later. At least 1.2 CEUs must come through ASPE, its chapters or approved ASPE CEU providers. Other eligible activities are capped by category:
| Recertification Category | Cap |
|---|---|
| Education / professional development | 1.2 CEUs |
| Higher education | 1.2 CEUs |
| Advanced professional activities | 0.6 CEUs |
| Industry leadership | 1.2 CEUs |
These are renewal categories, not exam weights, so do not confuse them with the exam content. ASPE membership is not required to keep your CPD as long as you meet the renewal requirements. If the credential lapses, an 18-month reinstatement window applies, with current and missed-cycle requirements; after that, returning means taking the exam again.
Sequencing Your Study Around the Curriculum
You do not need an elaborate method, but the order in which you tackle topics matters because several build on one another. A sensible sequence, using the six review-series headings, looks like this:
Drainage and venting foundations
- Start with Webinar 1 and 2 material: drainage hydraulics, sanitary vents, storm and site drainage. These topics feed directly into the heavily weighted Design category.
Water, thermal and safety topics
- Move to cold and hot water sizing, expansion and contraction, backflow prevention, then pumps. Practice the calculations until you can find the right table or equation fast in your reference.
Specialty systems and project delivery
- Cover fire suppression, sustainable design, fuel gas and medical gas, then specifications, construction services and administration. Do not skip these just because they involve less arithmetic.
Before test day, tab and annotate your permitted bound references in whatever way the rules allow (remembering that loose tabs and flags are not permitted), and rehearse with a timer so that 100 questions in 210 minutes feels familiar. Third-party practice material, including anything we publish, supports knowledge building only. It is not actual or recalled exam content and does not assess practical competence. Our CPD Study Guide 2026 and CPD Cheat Sheet help organize this phase, and you can test yourself with the practice questions on our main practice test site.
Key Takeaway
Because Design dominates the exam but specifications, construction services and administration still account for a real share of questions, build your preparation around both calculation speed and project-delivery knowledge. Then confirm every exam-day rule directly with ASPE.
