CPD Cheat Sheet 2026: One-Page Review of Must-Know Facts

TL;DR
  • CPD here means Certified in Plumbing Design from ASPE: 100 multiple-choice questions, 210 minutes, remotely proctored and open-book.
  • Published exam fee is $450 for ASPE members and $675 for nonmembers; the 2026 sitting is complete and 2027 dates are TBD.
  • ASPE publishes Design as the largest task area at roughly 65 of 100 questions; these are item counts, not official weights.
  • The passing score is a committee-set cut score, not a published fixed number, so ignore any "70%" claims you see.

Which CPD This Cheat Sheet Covers

"CPD" is an overloaded acronym. This page is about Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD), the credential administered by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. It is not Certified Project Director, it is not continuing professional development accreditation, and it is not a plumbing contractor license. If you need a broader orientation first, start with What Is CPD Certification? or What Does CPD Stand For?.

One more boundary worth memorizing: CPD is not professional engineer (PE) registration. It does not give you a PE title or signing and stamping authority. ASPE itself draws that distinction, so treat CPD as a recognized demonstration of plumbing-design knowledge, not a legal credential to practice engineering.

The Exam at a Glance

ItemWhat ASPE Publishes
Question count100 multiple-choice questions (scored/unscored split is unpublished)
Time allowed3.5 hours (210 minutes)
DeliveryElectronic, remotely proctored, open-book written examination
Question typesMultiple-choice only; no short-answer questions
ScoringBased on correct answers; no wrong-answer penalty
Results timingSix to eight weeks
Adaptive testingNot established

Because there is no penalty for wrong answers, never leave an item blank. With 210 minutes for 100 questions you have roughly two minutes per item, which sounds generous until a multi-step pipe-sizing problem eats six of them. Open-book does not mean easy; it means the exam rewards knowing where things are and how to apply them quickly. For a candid read on difficulty, see How Hard Is the CPD Exam?.

Eligibility in One Glance

The CPD examination page describes these routes to sit:

  • Full ASPE membership or previous approval to sit, or
  • At least four years of responsible plumbing-systems-design experience plus an engineering-related baccalaureate degree.

Substitutions exist for the degree: up to four additional years of relevant practical experience (eight total), or half a year of experience credit for each full year of accredited plumbing-engineering-related education. The Certified Plumbing Design Technician (CPDT) credential counts as one year of experience but is not a mandatory prerequisite.

Watch the wording: "Full ASPE membership" is a specific membership classification, not any paid membership. ASPE's Q&A repeats the degree/experience route without the membership alternative, so confirm your individual eligibility directly with ASPE and keep your documentation ready. Our CPD requirements guide walks through the paperwork side.

Fees, Timing and Results

Cost ItemASPE MemberNonmember
CPD examination fee$450$675
Recertification fee$75$165
Reinstatement (includes recertification)$200$260
2026 review webinar series (course price, not an exam fee)$300$500

These are the currently published amounts, not a promise that 2027 pricing is unchanged. Do not confuse the review-series registration price with the exam fee, and note that the webinar series does not award CEUs or PDHs. The full cost picture, including study materials, is in the CPD certification cost breakdown.

Scheduling status

The 2026 examination is completed; the credential has not been retired. ASPE's exam page says to check in November for 2027 dates, and the Q&A points to spring 2027 with dates TBD. No exact 2027 dates are confirmed. Older page text showing an April 2026 window is historical and should not be treated as an upcoming appointment range. Track updates on the CPD exam dates page.

Testing logistics run through contracted administrators. ASPE's current Q&A refers to remote-proctoring correspondence from ProctorExam. Historical references to Educational Testing Service in old job-analysis material do not prove ETS is the current booking provider. Current remote guidance uses the Chrome browser and the required proctoring setup.

Six-Webinar Curriculum Map

ASPE's 2026 CPD Review Webinar Series organizes preparation into six sessions. These are preparation-curriculum headings, not six official exam domains, and no weights are published for them. They are also explicitly a study supplement, not sole preparation and not a complete exam blueprint. The hierarchy below follows the series' top-level Overview. For a fuller walkthrough, read the CPD exam domains guide.

Webinar 1: Gathering Information; Flow in Drains; Interior (Sewage) Drainage Systems

The foundation block: collecting project inputs, then the hydraulics of drainage.

  • Project information gathering
  • Flow in drains
  • Interior sewage drainage system design

Webinar 2: Sanitary Vent Systems; Storm Drainage; Site Drainage; Cold Water Sizing

Venting, rainwater and site drainage, plus the first of the supply-side sizing topics.

  • Sanitary vent systems
  • Storm drainage and site drainage
  • Cold water sizing

Webinar 3: Hot Water Sizing; Expansion & Contraction; Backflow Prevention

Hot water generation and distribution, thermal movement in piping, and cross-connection protection.

  • Hot water sizing
  • Expansion and contraction
  • Backflow prevention

Webinar 4: Practice Exam; Sizing Pumps & Pumped Piping Systems; Sustainable Design; Fire Suppression

Pump and pumped-system sizing, sustainable design, and fire suppression, alongside a named course practice exam.

  • Sizing pumps and pumped piping systems
  • Sustainable design
  • Fire suppression

Webinar 5: Practice Exam 2; Fuel Gas Systems; Medical Gas Systems; Specifications

Gas systems and the specification-writing side of the job, with a second course practice exam.

  • Fuel gas systems
  • Medical gas systems
  • Specifications

Webinar 6: Quizzes; Construction Services; Administration

The project-delivery end: reviewing contractor work and managing the engagement.

  • Construction services
  • Administration
Known source conflict: the embedded descriptions of Webinars 4 and 5 do not perfectly match the top-level Overview. The Webinar 4 description repeats the Webinar 3 hot-water, expansion and backflow topics, and the Webinar 5 description lists Fire Suppression, which the Overview places in Webinar 4. This guide follows the Overview. Whatever the assignment, all of these subjects are fair game for study. "Practice Exam," "Practice Exam 2" and "Quizzes" are course activities, not permission to reproduce ASPE questions.

Published Task Allocations

Separately from the webinars, ASPE's CPD Q&A describes the exam by job task. The published approximate question allocations are item counts, not percentage weights, and they do not replace the six-webinar structure:

Task CategoryApproximate QuestionsWhat It Covers
Gathering Information + Administration (combined)11Scope, existing conditions, project-team contacts; authority-having-jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements, utility availability, budget constraints; work plans and schedules; coordination with other design disciplines
Design65Identify required systems, set each system's criteria, design the systems, coordinate them with one another and the building
Specifications13Determine and coordinate specification format with the design, describe the systems, coordinate with other specifications
Construction Services11Review submittals and installations for contract-document compliance; witness system tests

The takeaway is straightforward: Design is the heavyweight by a wide margin. Drainage, venting, storm and site systems, water sizing, backflow, pumps, fire suppression and gas systems all live there. But roughly a quarter of the exam sits outside pure design, so skipping specifications, construction services and administration because they feel "soft" is a classic mistake. Our CPD study guide shows how to balance both halves.

Open-Book Rules and Open Conflicts

This is the section where cheat sheets usually overreach. The public sources do not fully agree, so here is exactly what is established and what is not.

Allowed per the Q&A

  • Bound printed references, with annotations made within them
  • Approved electronic references and pre-existing personal notes, with document navigation and search, subject to platform restrictions
  • A calculator (the Q&A says any calculator)

Not allowed per the Q&A

  • Loose notes, staples, sticky notes, tabs or flags
  • AI assistance, including AI-assisted reader, browser or operating-system features
  • Communication with others, answer or coaching services, forums, remote-control or screen-sharing assistance
  • Secondary devices and unauthorized removable storage
Unresolved conflicts, stated plainly: (1) The older open-book FAQ says CD-ROMs and similar digital material are not allowed, while the newer Q&A electronic-reference policy permits approved electronic references; do not generalize either into a blanket rule. (2) The Q&A requires a phone or tablet for monitoring while its electronic policy prohibits secondary phones and tablets; the public wording does not resolve that exception. (3) ASPE's review-class page specifies a nonprogrammable calculator, while the Q&A says any calculator. Follow the instructions in your registered-candidate packet from ASPE and the proctoring provider, and confirm anything ambiguous before exam day.

Practically, build your reference binder early and tab nothing with loose tabs: write your index inside the bound material instead. Practice looking things up under time pressure so the open-book advantage is real.

Passing Score and Pass-Rate Facts

  • Passing score: set by a committee and psychometrician as a cut score. ASPE does not publish a fixed numerical threshold. Course practice-test marks are not the credential cut score. Details in the CPD passing score guide.
  • Historical pass data: ASPE's June 2023 "From the President's Keyboard" column reported roughly 51% passing for April 2023, against a preceding average around 61%. Those cohorts do not establish a 2026 or 2027 pass rate or your personal odds. See what the pass-rate data shows.

The honest summary: the exam is demanding enough that roughly half to six in ten historical candidates passed, and the current rate is unpublished. Plan as if passing is earned, not assumed.

Renewal and Reinstatement Numbers

Recertification ItemRule
ValidityTwo years; cycle runs May 1 through April 30 two years later
Total requirement2.4 CEUs (24 contact hours)
ASPE-sourced minimumAt least 1.2 CEUs through ASPE, its chapters or approved ASPE CEU providers
Education/professional development cap1.2 CEUs
Higher education cap1.2 CEUs
Advanced professional activities cap0.6 CEUs
Industry leadership cap1.2 CEUs
Lapsed credentials18-month reinstatement window with current and missed-cycle requirements; later return requires the exam

These caps are recertification categories, not exam weights. ASPE membership is not required to keep the credential when renewal requirements are met, though members pay less. For the broader career picture, including whether the credential pays off, see Is the CPD Certification Worth It? and the CPD salary guide. No ASPE-specific salary premium has been verified, so be wary of any site quoting one.

Mapping the Webinars to Weeks

If you have a spring sitting in mind, a six-week skeleton can follow the webinar order, front-loading the heaviest Design material. Adjust the pace to your own timeline; this is a scheduling aid, not an official plan.

Week 1

Drainage foundations

  • Flow in drains and interior sewage drainage sizing
  • Build your reference-binder index as you go
Week 2

Venting, storm, site, cold water

  • Sanitary vent layouts and storm/site drainage calculations
  • Cold water sizing problems timed against the clock
Week 3

Hot water and protection

  • Hot water sizing, expansion and contraction
  • Backflow prevention device selection
Week 4

Pumps, sustainability, fire suppression

  • Pump and pumped piping system sizing
  • Sustainable design and fire suppression basics
Week 5

Gas systems and specifications

  • Fuel gas and medical gas systems
  • Specification format and coordination
Week 6

Project delivery and full-length practice

  • Construction services and administration
  • Timed 100-question run-throughs; try our CPD practice tests

Key Takeaway

Independently authored practice questions build knowledge but are never actual or recalled ASPE questions and are not an official mock exam. Use them to find weak spots, then return to your bound references to close the gaps.

Quick-Answer FAQ

Does CPD make me a licensed professional engineer?

No. Certified in Plumbing Design is not PE registration, confers no PE title, and carries no signing or stamping authority. ASPE makes this distinction explicitly.

Is CPDT required before taking CPD?

No. The Certified Plumbing Design Technician credential counts as one year of experience toward eligibility but is not a mandatory prerequisite.

When is the next CPD exam?

The 2026 exam is complete. ASPE says to check in November for 2027 dates, and its Q&A indicates spring 2027 with dates to be determined. No exact dates are confirmed.

Can I bring any calculator and any digital files?

Sources conflict. The Q&A says any calculator, while a review-class page says nonprogrammable. Electronic references are allowed only when approved and within platform restrictions. Confirm with your candidate instructions.

Are the six webinars the six official exam domains?

No. They are an unweighted preparation-curriculum structure, not a complete exam blueprint. ASPE's separate task categories show Design as the largest area at about 65 of 100 questions, but those are approximate item counts, not percentage weights.
