CPD Requirements 2026: Eligibility, Prerequisites & How to Qualify

TL;DR
  • CPD here means Certified in Plumbing Design from ASPE, not Certified Project Director or continuing professional development.
  • Qualify through Full ASPE membership or previous approval, or through four years of design experience plus an engineering-related bachelor's degree.
  • Without the degree, up to four additional years of experience can substitute, for eight total.
  • CPDT counts as one year of experience but is not a mandatory prerequisite.

Which CPD This Article Covers

Search for "CPD requirements" and you will land on a mix of unrelated credentials. Some results describe a project-director certification. Others describe continuing professional development hours that engineers and other professionals log. Neither is what this article covers.

Here, CPD means Certified in Plumbing Design, the credential offered through the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. It is not a contractor license, and it is not a continuing-education accreditation. If you want the broader orientation first, our explainers on what CPD certification is and what CPD stands for cover the naming confusion in more depth.

This guide focuses on the question most candidates ask first: Am I eligible, and how do I document it? It also covers what you are qualifying for, so you can judge whether the effort fits your career. For the full cost picture, see the CPD certification cost breakdown.

The Two Routes to Sit for the Exam

ASPE's CPD examination page describes eligibility in two alternatives. You need to satisfy one of them.

RouteWhat ASPE RequiresWho It Typically Fits
Membership / prior-approval routeFull ASPE membership, or previous approval to sitMembers already holding Full status; candidates previously approved by ASPE
Degree + experience routeAt least four years of responsible plumbing-systems-design experience plus an engineering-related baccalaureate degreeEngineers and designers with a relevant bachelor's degree and design practice behind them
Experience-substitution routeEight total years of relevant practical experience in lieu of the degree (four required years plus up to four additional)Designers without an engineering-related degree but with a long design record
A source difference worth knowing: ASPE's CPD Q&A repeats the degree-and-experience route but does not repeat the examination page's Full-member / previous-approval alternative. We follow the current examination-page wording here. Because the two public pages are not worded identically, confirm your individual eligibility directly with ASPE before paying any fee.

Note the phrase "responsible" experience. The requirement is not simply time spent in the industry. It refers to responsible plumbing-systems-design experience, meaning work where you carried genuine design responsibility. That is the experience you should be prepared to document.

Working Out Your Experience Credit

The degree-and-experience route has built-in flexibility, and the details matter if your background is not a straight line.

  • Baseline: four years of responsible plumbing-systems-design experience plus an engineering-related baccalaureate degree.
  • No qualifying degree: up to four additional years of relevant practical experience may stand in for the degree, for eight years total.
  • Accredited education credit: half a year of experience credit is allowed for each full year of accredited plumbing-engineering-related education.
  • CPDT: holding the Certified Plumbing Design Technician credential counts as one year of experience.

Ask yourself these questions before applying:

  1. Is my degree clearly engineering-related, or will ASPE need to evaluate it?
  2. Can I describe the design responsibility I carried on specific projects, not just my job title?
  3. If I lack the degree, can I show eight years of relevant practical experience?
  4. Do I have any accredited plumbing-engineering-related coursework that earns partial credit?

No fixed mandatory training-hour count or reference-count requirement was verified for this credential, so do not assume one exists or pad your application around an invented threshold. The documentation and ASPE approval are what matter.

Full Membership vs. Any Membership

One of the easiest mistakes is treating "ASPE member" as a single category. Full ASPE membership is a specific membership classification, not any paid membership tier. If you plan to qualify through the membership route, verify with ASPE that your classification is the one the examination page means.

Membership also affects price. The published exam fee is $450 for ASPE members and $675 for nonmembers, a $225 difference. That gap is often a reason candidates join before registering, though it is a cost calculation, not an eligibility shortcut. Joining solely to save on the fee does not by itself establish that you meet the qualification route you intend to use.

Where CPDT Fits

The Certified Plumbing Design Technician (CPDT) is ASPE's technician-level credential, and it is frequently confused with CPD. Two facts keep the relationship clear:

  • CPDT is not a mandatory prerequisite for CPD, according to ASPE's CPD Q&A.
  • If you hold CPDT, it counts as one year of experience toward the CPD requirement.

So CPDT can help your experience math, but you can sit for CPD without it. If you are deciding between the two, think about your role: CPDT targets technician-level work, while CPD is aimed at engineers and designers of plumbing systems.

What CPD Is Not: PE, Stamping and Licensure

Candidates sometimes pursue CPD hoping it substitutes for professional-engineer registration. It does not. ASPE's own June 2023 article on whether to pursue the CPD draws the distinction: CPD is not PE registration, is not a professional-engineer title, and does not confer signing or stamping authority.

How to frame it: CPD is a credential of demonstrated plumbing-design knowledge awarded through an ASPE examination. Licensure authority comes from state engineering boards, which is a separate path. If your jurisdiction requires a stamped drawing, CPD alone will not meet that need.

Whether the credential is worth your time then depends on your goals: professional recognition, hiring conversations, or employer expectations. We discuss that tradeoff in Is the CPD Certification Worth It? and, for earnings context, the CPD salary guide. We do not quote a salary uplift here because no verified ASPE-specific figure exists.

What You Are Qualifying For: Exam Format and Fees

Eligibility is only the gate. Understanding the exam helps you decide whether to proceed and how to time your application.

ItemPublished Detail
Questions100 multiple-choice (scored/unscored split not published)
Time3.5 hours (210 minutes)
DeliveryElectronically delivered, remotely proctored, open-book written examination
Short-answer itemsNone
Exam fee$450 ASPE members; $675 nonmembers
Results timingSix to eight weeks
Passing scoreCommittee/psychometrician-set cut score; no published fixed numerical threshold

Fees are the current exam-page amounts, not a guarantee of unchanged 2027 pricing. Scores reflect correct answers without a wrong-answer penalty, so answering every item is rational. For more on scoring, read CPD Passing Score: What You Need to Pass and CPD Pass Rate: What the Data Shows. Be aware that ASPE's June 2023 article reported roughly 51% passing for the April 2023 cohort and an average around 61% before it; those are historical cohorts, not a current rate or a prediction for you.

Do not confuse the 2026 review webinar series prices ($300 member, $500 nonmember) with exam fees. They are separate products, and the webinar series does not award CEUs or PDHs.

Open-book does not mean unrestricted

The exam is open-book, but the rules are specific. ASPE's Q&A permits bound printed references with annotations inside them, and it permits approved electronic references and pre-existing personal notes, subject to platform restrictions. It does not permit loose notes, staples, sticky notes, tabs or flags, and it prohibits AI assistance, communication or coaching services and secondary devices. Some public pages conflict with one another on calculators (any calculator versus nonprogrammable) and on older digital-media rules. Treat the instructions you receive as a registered candidate as controlling, and do not rely on a blog summary for exam-day logistics, including this one.

Scheduling Status: 2026 Completed, 2027 Not Yet Dated

As of our September 30, 2026 verification, the 2026 exam has been completed. The credential is not retired. ASPE's examination page says to check in November for 2027 dates, and the Q&A points to spring 2027 with dates to be determined. We do not assert exact 2027 dates, and any page that does should be checked against ASPE directly.

Key Takeaway

Use the time before the 2027 window opens to assemble your eligibility documentation, not just to study. Confirming your route with ASPE early prevents a documentation problem from consuming your registration window. Track updates on our CPD exam dates page.

What the Review Curriculum Covers

Once you qualify, preparation begins. ASPE Education's 2026 CPD Review Webinar Series is organized into six webinars. These are preparation-curriculum headings, not official weighted exam domains, and the series is a study supplement rather than a complete exam blueprint. Our guide to all six CPD content areas goes deeper.

Webinar 1: Gathering Information; Flow in Drains; Interior (Sewage) Drainage Systems

Project intake and the fundamentals of how drainage flow behaves.

Webinar 2: Sanitary Vent Systems; Storm Drainage; Site Drainage; Cold Water Sizing

Venting, rainwater and site drainage, and domestic cold water sizing.

Webinar 3: Hot Water Sizing; Expansion & Contraction; Backflow Prevention

Hot water demand, thermal movement and cross-connection protection.

Webinar 4: Practice Exam; Sizing Pumps & Pumped Piping Systems; Sustainable Design; Fire Suppression

Pumping, sustainability and fire suppression, plus a practice exam activity.

Webinar 5: Practice Exam 2; Fuel Gas Systems; Medical Gas Systems; Specifications

Specialty gas systems and specification writing, plus a second practice exam activity.

Webinar 6: Quizzes; Construction Services; Administration

Submittal and installation review, and project administration.

ASPE's Q&A separately describes exam-related task categories: Gathering Information, Design, Specifications, Construction Services and Administration. Approximate published allocations are 11 items for Gathering Information and Administration combined, 65 for Design, 13 for Specifications and 11 for Construction Services. These are approximate item counts, not percentage weights, but they do show why design work dominates the exam. Small public inconsistencies exist between the webinar overview and the individual webinar descriptions (for example, where Fire Suppression is placed); we follow the top-level overview. A deeper walkthrough is in our CPD study guide.

A Qualification Plan Built Around Your Gaps

Generic study calendars do not help a candidate whose real obstacle is eligibility. This sequence prioritizes documentation first, then content, based on the curriculum above.

Step 1

Confirm your route

  • Decide whether you fit the membership/prior-approval route or the degree-and-experience route.
  • Contact ASPE to confirm your classification and any prior approval.
Step 2

Inventory your design experience

  • List projects where you held responsible design duties.
  • Tally years, adding CPDT credit or accredited-education credit if relevant.
Step 3

Find your content gaps

  • If your daily work is drainage and water, expect gas systems, pumping and specifications to need the most attention.
  • If you work in specifications or construction administration, expect sizing calculations to need more.
Step 4

Check readiness

  • Test yourself with independently authored practice on our CPD practice test site.
  • Use those results to decide between a webinar series, a study guide or additional reference prep.

Keep one limit in mind: independently written practice questions support knowledge preparation only. They are not actual or recalled ASPE questions and not an official mock exam. For a compact refresher, the CPD cheat sheet summarizes key facts, and the difficulty guide helps calibrate effort.

After You Qualify and Pass: Keeping the Credential

CPD is valid for two years. Recertification requires 2.4 CEUs (24 contact hours), with at least 1.2 CEUs earned through ASPE, its chapters or approved ASPE CEU providers. The cycle runs May 1 through April 30 two years later.

Recertification CategoryCap
Education / professional development1.2 CEUs
Higher education1.2 CEUs
Advanced professional activities0.6 CEUs
Industry leadership1.2 CEUs

Published recertification fees are $75 for ASPE members and $165 for nonmembers. If the credential lapses, reinstatement costs $200 (members) or $260 (nonmembers), including recertification, and an 18-month reinstatement window applies. After that window, returning requires the examination again. Membership itself is not required to retain CPD as long as renewal requirements are met. These categories govern renewal only and say nothing about exam weighting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a PE license to take the CPD exam?

No PE license requirement was verified. Eligibility is based on Full ASPE membership or previous approval, or on responsible design experience plus an engineering-related degree (or additional experience in lieu of the degree). CPD itself is not PE registration.

Can I qualify without an engineering degree?

Yes, potentially. ASPE allows up to four additional years of relevant practical experience in lieu of the degree, for eight total years, and credits half a year of experience for each full year of accredited plumbing-engineering-related education. Confirm your situation with ASPE.

Is CPDT required before CPD?

No. CPDT is not a mandatory prerequisite. If you hold it, it counts as one year of experience toward the CPD requirement.

When is the next CPD exam?

The 2026 exam has been completed. ASPE's examination page says to check in November for 2027 dates, and its Q&A indicates spring 2027 with dates to be determined. No exact 2027 dates are confirmed here.

How much does the CPD exam cost?

The published exam fee is $450 for ASPE members and $675 for nonmembers, based on the current exam page. These are not guaranteed for 2027, and the review webinar series is priced separately.

Eligibility is the first checkpoint, and it rewards early, careful documentation. Once your route is confirmed, a structured look at the six curriculum areas and honest practice on the CPD practice test will tell you how much preparation remains.
